Who can exchange
You can exchange your licence if you live in Poland at least 185 days a year — for work or personal ties — or study here for at least 6 months. Registered address (meldunek) is not required: a tenancy agreement or an employer's certificate will do.
How long you can drive on your old licence
A licence from a non-EU country is valid in Poland for 6 months from the start of residence. After that you may drive only with a Polish licence, so it is best to apply early.
Do you need an exam
If your licence was issued by a party to the 1968 Vienna or 1949 Geneva convention (Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan and many others), no exam is needed. Otherwise you take a theory exam at WORD: the urząd first creates a driver candidate profile (PKK).
Licence verification
The urząd asks the issuing country to confirm your licence is genuine. For non-EU countries this takes from a few weeks to a few months and cannot be sped up. After the exchange the urząd keeps your foreign licence and returns it to the issuing country.
Categories C and D
Truck and bus categories also need a medical certificate, sometimes a psychological one. If you work as a driver, we'll also check your professional qualification (code 95).
