How long can you drive in Poland on a foreign licence

A foreign licence isn't valid in Poland forever. For non-EU countries it's 6 months from the start of residence, then you need a Polish one.

In short

A non-EU licence is valid for 6 months from the start of residence in Poland. You can exchange it if you live here 185+ days a year. Verification with the issuing country takes weeks or months, so apply straight away. Ukrainian licences with UKR status follow a separate rule.

The 6-month rule

Under the Act on Vehicle Drivers (art. 5), a licence issued outside the EU lets you drive in Poland for 6 months from the start of residence. EU licences are valid without limit.

When the clock starts

From the start of residence: when Poland became your normal place of residence — for example when you started work or a tenancy. A tourist trip doesn't start the clock.

Why apply straight away

  • Verification with the issuing country takes from a few weeks to a few months
  • The 6-month period keeps running during verification
  • After 6 months you may drive only with a Polish licence

The exception for Ukrainians

With UKR status a Ukrainian licence is recognised while temporary protection lasts — currently until 4.03.2027.
